If you look at cognitive functions, and Beebe's 8 position model, everyone has both Fe and Fi, at different position combinations. These are grossly reductionist summaries, just to get you thinking.
(I am using typings by Objective Personality).
Fe Dominant Function (single decider with Ti inferior)
- "exceptional understanding of social dynamics
- adept at recognizing needs of others
- healthy user can be skilled at mediating conflict
- ironically they may be conflict avoidant
- core motivation to get people's needs met
- source
- Fe dominant function is focused on unifying people and responding to their emotions, needs, and values
- constantly reading the emotional “temperature” of the room you’re in and can easily alter the mood of the room with your powerful presence.
- you bring people together and help unify them towards a common goal.
- making people feel comfortable is something you excel at, and you often know how to use words, gestures, or humor to put people at ease
- might make a joke at your own expense to help someone in an embarrassing situation feel better.
- believe in doing what you can to make life better for people as a whole
- more focused on humanity as a whole than individualistic concerns, you are often involved in helping out in your community and being there for people emotionally"
- source
Fi Opposing Role
- "introverted feeling seems mysterious and confusing
- openly share values and discuss feelings
- will adapt your plans for overall well being of group
- view Fi types as needlessly oppositional, troublesome, self-absorbed
- “Why aren’t they thinking of other people’s feelings?”
- “Why aren’t they telling me how they feel?”
- “Why aren’t they getting aligned with the group so we can achieve this goal?”
- source
Fe Auxiliary Function (double decider with tertiary Ti)
- "grow through Extroverted Feeling by pressing themselves to identify their own needs and preferences
- resisting the urge "to go along to get along: allows Fe’s true needs to rise to the surface
- this requires the identification and enforcement of the Fe user’s boundaries
- as auxiliary Fe is developed, users can leverage their understanding of social dynamics to help make decisions about the best way to bring their visionary ideas into the world"
- source
- "The ISFJ auxiliary function is their Fe, which is what makes them such compassionate and caring people. They are focused on taking care of their loved ones and seek to ensure that they are happy. This presents itself by making the ISFJ someone who is constantly focusing on tending to their environment and their loved ones, wanting to create a sense of peace and comfort. This works with their dominant function (Si), and causes the ISFJ to use past methods to ensure that their loved ones are happy, and everything it maintained perfectly.
- "The INFJs secondary or auxiliary function is their Fe, which definitely works to make them the compassionate and understanding people they are. The fact that their Fe is in their second placement makes the INFJ understanding and caring, but at the same time not as hovering. They know how to give people space, and don’t like pushing them in ways that makes them feel overwhelmed. They also have a subtle way of making others feel comfortable sharing things with them, and can really easily get to the heart of the matter. The auxiliary Fe of the INFJ makes it so that they understand people very well, and can be extremely empathetic people." source
Fi Critical Parent Role
- "deeply aware of the emotional atmosphere you are in
- naturally sense how people are feeling and notice minor shifts in their emotional state
- may put your own individual needs or desires on the backburner to take care of group needs or avoid “rocking the boat”
- easily notice social expectations and cultural values
- try to respect those unless they are violating a deeply-held value
- may be somewhat blind to your own emotional needs or internal states
- you try to tend and nurture other people’s emotions.
- critical parent Fi shows up when feeling ashamed, vulnerable, extremely irritable, or defensive
- when you have failed to stand up for yourself, when you have betrayed one of your own values, or when you see others acting in a way that you see as unethical
- it can show up in internal or external criticisms like
- “What kind of person are you? How could you do something so wrong?”
- might be much more critical and harsh on the inside than anyone ever sees on the outside
- struggle to forgive yourself for ethical shortcomings"
- source
Tertiary Fe Function (double decider with Ti secondary)
- "all personality types tend to find relief and comfort in their tertiary function
- EXTPs find that connecting with others, giving and receiving affirmation, and swapping preferences and opinions is a way to relieve stress
- can also enjoy the company of FJ personality types who tend to exude natural warmth, empathy, and awareness of other’s needs and moods"
- source
Trickster Fi Role
- "trickster Fi might show up in you playing devil’s advocate to a passionate individual defending a cause
- might poke fun at their seriousness, sensitivity, and perceived stubbornness
- might seem absolutely ridiculous to you that someone would tailor their lives around ethical codes or feelings that can’t be logically mapped out
- might defend the ethics of the other side of their argument just to prove them wrong – even if you don’t subscribe to either side
- Fi doms can seem overly-sensitive and unreasonable to you
- might feel like you have to walk on eggshells around them
- inside you might think that they’re trying to ask too much of you
- Fi Trickster might show up in pranks played on such types or sly, offhand humor at their expense"
- source
- "as an IxTP you enjoy understanding systems, theories, and how things work
- you have a gift for troubleshooting, categorizing, and organizing logical principles in your mind
- of less concern is how people are feeling, what’s socially acceptable, and whether or not the atmosphere around you is harmonious
- when you have to go to social events and “work the room” you may feel out of your depth and uncomfortable
- when people around you are emotionally charged, you probably feel like the right words are evading you
- you may wish that people were more like car engines, easy to understand – with each facet connecting easily to another
- having to delve into someone else’s emotional experience can feel overwhelming and awkward to you"
- source
Devilish Fi Role
- "In the INTP, Fi may manifest detrimentally in response to stress.
- The INTP’s utility of Fi is ill-managed and inept and using it often results in ill-conceived principles, poor judgement and harmful choices.
- Because their own feelings and emotions are often a mystery even to themselves, INTPs are ill-equipped to harness Fi in decision making
- may become uncharacteristically emotional and furious and will withdraw from others to prevent anyone seeing their lack of emotional stability
- may become hypersensitive about their relationships, perceiving unintended insults and insignificant details as personal attacks while cultivating a belief that others hate or dislike them
- can develop a “martyr complex” and the sense that they are being persecuted
- physically, they may feel tension headaches, and neck or shoulder aches from tension in their body
- using Fi may result in increased selfishness and a devaluation of others and their time
- may spend excessive time brooding over negative emotions and thinking about things that lead nowhere
- lack of motivation and loss of focus and clear goals may develop a sense of purposelessness.
- thinking itself seems to become the purpose of life, and not the means to any meaningful end"
- source
Fi Dominant Function (single decider with Te inferior)
- "for INFPs and ISFPs, Introverted Feeling is their primary way of showing up in and interacting with the world
- Flow is accessed in times where Fi is used regularly, free of too many logistical details or pressure to conform
- Their incredible ability to convey their inner worlds through creative expression means Fi users should set aside time to dive into their chosen artistic endeavor." source
- Fi dominant function is focused on assessing the world based on what you feel is authentic and right for individuals
- focus on issues of identity, beliefs, conscience, and values
- believe in staying true to who you really are, and not bending for outside influences
- society will always try to pressure you to conform to its rules and agendas, but as an Introverted Feeling type, you want to listen to the small voice inside you that guides you to follow your conscience, your truth, and your unique desires.
- you’re deeply in touch with the human experience and try to make decisions based on what’s really important in life
- have a lot of depth and insight based on your introspective, ethically-conscious nature
- Fi is a judging process, you come at life from a place of conviction.
- want to find your path and follow it without being influenced by societal pressures."
- source
Fe Opposing Role
- "As an IFP personality type, you consider yourself empathetic and considerate, but more important than connecting outwardly is connecting inwardly.
- You want to live in alignment with your core desires, priorities, and values. If that makes you a misfit or disconnected from the group then so be it.
- When you’re dealing with FJ personality types you might feel like they are working too hard to please everyone, bending for others too much, or distracting from people’s personal values in the name of “harmony” too much.
- You might ask yourself things like, “Why can’t they make space for people’s individual values? We don’t all have to agree!” “Why are they undermining me?” “Do they have a hidden agenda?”
- You might also experience Extraverted Feeling in a destabilizing way at times.
- You might find yourself inwardly bombarded by the agreed-upon group standards of the environment you are in.
- You might feel overwhelmed by other people’s emotions and values. You might become stubborn about how others affect you, trying to set up boundaries to protect you from their demands or needs."
- source
Fi Auxiliary Function (double decider with tertiary Te)
- "for ENFPs and ESFPs, Introverted Feeling is the way to growth
- Nurturing Fi for growth allows users to make decisions based on their core values and inner knowing
- ENFPs & ESFPs benefit from embracing the slower pace of this function in comparison to their Dominant functions and should spend intentional time turning inward to mine for what is true to them."
- source
- "The ESFPs auxiliary function is their introverted feeling, which focused on their emotions and morals. They are deeply passionate people because of this, and choose to follow their hearts more than their minds. ESFPs do know how to approach things logically, they simply don’t value this as much as their emotions. They do what feels good in the moment, instead of obsessing over the past or the future. This can cause the ESFP to appear a bit spontaneous and sometimes reckless, but it is part of what makes them such fun and exciting people.
- The ENFPs auxiliary function is their introverted feeling (Fi), which makes them in touch with their inner morals and emotions. This can present itself in much different ways when it is their secondary function, making the ENFP in touch with their feelings but not as ruled by them. They might not spend as much time sifting through their emotions, instead they let it be a guide that works more in the background. They are drive by their curiosity and desire to seek out inspiration, and their Fi helps provide a guidepost for what they believe is right and true to themselves." source
Fe Critical Parent Role
- "as an EFP, you value Introverted Feeling (Fi) over Extraverted Feeling (Fe).
- You crave a sense of harmony with others, but not at the expense of your individual values.
- Introverted Feeling focuses on living in harmony with one’s own values and desires, which means that you prefer to stick to your individual code of ethics and path in life.
- If you rock the boat by being individualistic, then so be it.
- You also try to hold space for others to be their unique selves.
- Critical Parent Extraverted Feeling can help you to have a stronger sense of the needs and values of the people around you.
- It can help to broaden your views, take in other people’s needs, and assess group and societal values to determine whether they are valuable for yourself or others.
- You become more expressive of your feelings and feel a stronger sense of unity and mutual support with others.
- When you feel vulnerable, attacked, cranky, or ashamed your Critical Parent might show up in belittling or harsh remarks towards yourself or others.
- You might chastise yourself or others for failures at Extraverted Feeling (responding to group needs, respecting societal values, demonstrating feeling values outwardly).
- You might have intrusive thoughts like: “You never think of anyone but yourself,” “You had to make everything awkward, didn’t you?” “You’re such a weirdo,” “You’ll never fit in.”"
- source
Tertiary Fi Function (double decider with secondary Te)
- "the tertiary function is often the one we prefer to be comforted with
- may comfort ourselves by using this function or we may appreciate other people who use this function in a mature, healthy way
- for this reason, many IXTJs are drawn to FP personality types
- FPs use Fi in the dominant or auxiliary position and so tend to have mature use of Fi (if they are healthy)
- ITJs can find comfort in the sincerity, compassion, integrity, and authenticity of Fi-users.
- can find their listening skills, personal resolve, and focus on morality a steadying force in their lives."
- source
Trickster Fe Role
- "because you have Extraverted Feeling in the Trickster position, you’re likely to see strong expressions of it as somewhat disingenuous
- People who “work the room” or demonstrate a lot of emotional intensity can seem suspicious to you
- You may project your Trickster onto them, seeing them as inauthentic, cloying, or manipulative.
- You may inwardly mock or roll your eyes at them, wondering if they’re “up to something.”
- At the same time, when called upon to use Fe, perhaps in a social situation, it can feel awkward and stressful for you.
- It might be more tempting for you to sarcastically exude Fe than to do it in a serious manner.
- Because you naturally crave a great deal of independence, having to consider other people’s feelings and connect with them on an emotional level can feel overwhelming.
- At the same time, you might know how to tap into Trickster Fe to get something you want.
- Less healthy ITJs can often manipulate the emotions of others in order to get the desired outcome."
- source
Inferior Fi Function (single decider with Te dom)
- "As an ExTJ, you consider yourself a “doer” more than a dreamer
- You enjoy organizing your life for efficiency and effectiveness.
- You can easily condense any problem or decision down to a yes or no answer, and you easily sense the logical cause and effects of various options.
- Because of this, you can become so fixated on doing and achieving that you lose sight of your core values and personal needs.
- You might struggle with workaholism or become brash in your decisions – choosing what’s logical over what aligns with your values or the values of others.
- Dwelling on your feelings about things can feel like a waste of time because it’s not accomplishing anything on your to-do list.
- Your inferior function can also show up in your relationships and friendships with other personality types.
- You might struggle to come to agreements with Feeling-Perceiving personality types because you’re both looking at the opposite side of the coin in decisions.
- You may see them as overly sensitive, unproductive, or too fixated on their feelings.
- Likewise, they may find you insensitive, pushy, or out of touch with your feelings.
- The truth is that both of you have an equally valuable perspective to bring to the situation so if you can respect it and learn from each other your decisions can be much more effective in the long run."
- source
Devilish Fe Role
- "Fe is the 8th function in the ENTJ function stack. Fe responds according to expressed or even unexpressed wants and needs of others.
- It often involves a desire to connect with or disconnect from, others and is often indicated by expressions of warmth and self-disclosure.
- When their stress-induced Fe emerges, ENTJs become uncharacteristically emotional and furious and withdraw from others to prevent them seeing their lack of emotional stability.
- When convinced others don’t like, appreciate, or need them, they may over-accommodate others’ needs or become domineering.
- They may become hypersensitive about their relationships, misinterpreting tiny, trivial details and exhibiting paranoid suspicion that others hate or dislike them.
- Their insecurities and desire for social affirmation and validation may drive them to desperate and unbecoming measures."
